At Union City Wonderschool, children begin their days with self-initiated and self-directed learning. We believe this to be the best vehicle to guide their ideas and experiences. We provide the space and support for children to try out their ideas and make meaningful connections about their world. Children are supported in whatever ways they individually choose to express themselves. Here at Union City Wonderschool, a child’s emotional disposition is at the heart of our teaching. Giving children the vocabulary and time to express their emotions is a key component to the healthy interactions we have here at our school. The environment is prepared for engagement, adventure, and discovery. We provide materials to support the collaborative and independent ways that children engage with one another. We believe these types of collaborations between children and teachers solidify a child’s understanding of themselves, other people, and the world around them.
We are located in a quiet neighborhood of Cambridge Way in Union City, CA. We are right off the intersection of Union City Blvd and Smith Street. Our program is located less than a block from Courthouse Landing Park which gives us great opportunities to enjoy a stroll together everyday to play. The environment at Union City Wonderschool encompasses the ingredients that make learning special: it’s self driven, socially stimulating and an abundance of open-ended natural materials to truly assist children in their inquiring disposition that constantly tries to understand their world. We understand that for young children almost everything is a new experience, and that is why we have carefully curated our environment to stimulate children’s senses and encourage their exploration. Everything from our mud kitchen to our sensory bins seeks to give our children enriching experiences that are only based on their individual interests. We value parent participation and involvement and invite parents to share in activities with our learning group.
At Union City Wonderschool we embark on the adventure of supporting growing young minds. We are here to support the many ways children choose to learn and express themselves. To us, being outside is an essential part of a good day. Our program is located one block from a local park (Courthouse Landing Park, Union City CA). This park is ideal for full scale large gross motor activities. We will visit here everyday for outdoor play and learning.
The Union City Wonderschool also has two pet goldfishes named Nemo and Dory :)
Director: Uwimana Middleton
Uwimana has worked in the field of Early Childhood Education for 17 years. Her journey began while volunteering during her summers at the child development center she attended as a child (Dr. Charles R. Drew Child Development Center in San Francisco). Her early start gave her the foundation she needed to be sensitive to the many different learning styles of children. She would later use her insight in working with infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children.
She has held both substitute and head teacher roles in a variety of settings (universities, churches, parent co-ops and after school programs). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development with an emphasis in Child Growth and Development from Pacific Oaks College. She also holds a California Teacher’s permit.
Uwimana enjoys her profession immensely and maintains her enthusiasm and commitment to Child Development by attending local conferences and keeping up to date with the latest early childhood education research in the field.
She enjoys spending her extra time outdoors with her husband and 2 children, checking out new parks, and going on adventures with her extended family.
We are a proud member of the Wonderschool network.
