Our Teachers
Greetings! My name is Myi-Shanka (Mya) McMillan, and I am the proud owner of Hands of Purpose Childcare located in Durham, NC. I truly believe our academic atmosphere is designed for “All children to Excel and Pursue Purpose through Play!” My passion for launching children into purpose stems from childhood paired with the birth of my children, Zione & Ziah Oliver; who serve as my daily motivation to pour into the hearts of others. My favorite quote is, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Most recently, I have obtained my Full License to Practice as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LCMHCS) in the state of North Carolina. My ultimate desire is to own & operate a childcare facility that includes a private counseling practice, designed to “Break Barriers of Trauma” as well as build harmony in families. Dually noted, I am also a Certified in Woman’s Entrepreneurship and Trauma in the state of North Carolina. In my spare time, I travel, write poetry, provide individual & family therapy, as well as facilitate Psychoeducation and Empowerment groups. Please allow me to share a few other character traits. Myi-Shanka not only reflects zeal, but she has years of experience in helping children/youth grasp purpose. In May 2006, she graduated with Honors receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. Her passion for youth encouraged her to concentrate on child development and family relations. Throughout her tenure at North Carolina Central University, she had various job opportunities, which groomed her ambition to serve as one of the best Early Childhood Professionals in North Carolina. As a result of a fatal car accident in 2007, limited mobility, and work restrictions; Myi-Shanka found it necessary to open up her own licensed family childcare home in 2008. In May 2014, Myi-Shanka graduated with her Master’s in Professional Counseling. All in all, it is my pleasure to invite you and your child (ren) into my family of purpose!
Philosophy
At our school, we strive to create a safe and caring community of young explorers inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Our program is a place where children can learn through doing, invent through making, and solve problems by working together. We believe that when children are truly engaged with their environment, magic happens. Our team of experienced and innovative teachers do this by creating a space driven by the interests and ideas of the children who inhabit it.

About our program
Step inside Purpose is Waiting!!
Through our program, we seek to develop supportive communities for families. We also foster curiosity, scientific inquiry, and critical thinking in young people to enable them to draw their own conclusions. We believe in cultivating reason and empathy as foundations of an ethical, productive and fulfilling life Innovation-empowering leaders, exploring new approaches, and sharing ideas. To add, we believe in practicality, taking action, creating solutions, and providing hands on support. We teach courage, speaking out, thinking outside the box, and challenging ourselves and others. We provide a safe and fun environment for personal and social growth. We rely on cooperation, sharing ideas, and working together.
