Our Teachers

Welcome to Wawas Care Wonderschool!

Meet Sulma (Founder and Assistant Teacher) Sulma is the heart behind Wawas Care. With over 15 years of hands-on experience in early childhood education, Sulma brings deep knowledge, warmth, and cultural richness to Wawas. Originally from Peru, she founded Wawas Care with a vision to create a nurturing, play-based environment where children thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Sulma leads a full Spanish-immersion experience, introducing children to a second language through songs, stories, play, and everyday conversation. Sulma is constantly expanding her expertise—actively engaging in professional development courses through WestEd to stay current with the best practices in toddler and preschool education.

Meet Angie (Curriculum Director & Lead Administrator) Angie leads our bilingual Experience Curriculum in English and Spanish and trains staff to deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons for our children. As Lead Administrator, she manages enrollments and oversees daily operations.

Angie holds a B.S. in Business Administration from UC Berkeley. Angie has also completed child developmental psychology courses at Berkeley City College. She continues to expand her expertise through WestEd’s Infant and Toddler Program.

Testimonials

Ena and Sulma started caring for our son when he was 6 months old and we couldn’t have been happier with their loving, nurturing, and thoughtful care. Our little one loved getting there every morning and was engaged every time we picked him up. The combination of small class size and language immersion was exactly what we were hoping to find and we felt so lucky to have a spot in their program. We moved out of state, so sadly had to leave Wawa’s, but we would recommend it to anyone looking for excellent Spanish immersion childcare.

Philosophy

At Wawas Care, our philosophy is grounded in the belief that early childhood is a critical time for emotional, social, and cognitive growth—and that children learn best through play, connection, and meaningful experiences. Inspired by founder Sulma’s Peruvian heritage and over a decade of experience in early childhood education, our program blends bilingual immersion, cultural appreciation, and developmentally appropriate practices to create a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and inspired to learn. We use a play-based, child-centered approach that encourages curiosity, independence, and confidence, while gently guiding children through milestones in language, literacy, and social-emotional development. At Wawas Care, we see each child as capable and unique—and our goal is to support their whole development with love, intention, and joy.

Location

Wawas Care Wonderschool is located in the South Berkeley neighborhood.

About our program

What Makes Wawas Care Unique:

Homemade Meals: A mix of Peruvian-American dishes with an emphasis on whole food nutrition. We believe that healthy, balanced meals are essential for children’s growth and development, and we proudly prepare fresh meals in-house every day.

Bilingual Education: As a Spanish immersion program, we integrate language learning into our daily routines—through conversation, songs, stories, and play. Children build strong communication skills in both English and Spanish in a natural, engaging way.

Comprehensive Early Learning Curriculum: Our thoughtfully designed curriculum supports each stage of early development, blending play-based learning, cultural exploration, and age-appropriate academics. We focus on building skills in language, literacy, motor development, emotional regulation, and social interaction, laying a strong foundation for school readiness and lifelong learning.

At Wawas Care, your child is embraced as part of our extended family. We are committed to creating a loving, enriching environment where every child can thrive—through play, through culture, and through care.
