Philosophy

At Maria’s Montessori School, each Montessori classroom contains several sequential and self-correcting materials, which facilitates the learning of skills and gradually leads to the learning of abstract concepts. The Montessori materials can be divided into three main groups: Practical Life exercises, Sensorial materials, and Academic materials, which await each child’s moments of interest in Reading, Math, Science and Geography. Extended curriculum is also offered throughout the week: Music, Art and Yoga/Stretch. Our program encourages children to function at the upper limits of their potential. Their instruction begins in concrete realities, adding one difficulty at a time, moving sequentially into abstract theory. The development of critical thinking skills occurs naturally in such an environment. MMS’s early childhood classrooms are multi-age settings. Mixed age grouping encourages the sense of family and community while providing mentoring opportunities, in which the older students help the younger, thereby reinforce their own skills in the process.
