Our Teachers

Hello! I am Glenda Dunn, the founder of Dunn’s Wonderschool. I was inspired to start my own program because it has always been my dream to design my own space where children can blossom and grow. I have over 30 years experience working with young children from 0-12 years of age. During this time, I worked for the YWCA After-school Program, as a Assistant Teacher, Teacher & Director. I worked as a Site Supervisor for Head Start and State Preschool. I was a Site Supervisor for Santa Monica Malibu School District were I was responsible for the Head Start Program, Full-Day Preschool, State Preschool and the After-School Program. The last positions that I held before starting my own business was an Assistant Director for a Learning Developmental Program and a Behavioral Therapist as well. I also have a AA Degree in Liberal Arts, BA Degree in Child Development and a Master’s Degree in Human Behavior. I am a very loving and dedicated individual who is very passionate about the work and services that I provide. My goal is to see that all children in our program succeed, regardless of their circumstances that they may be faced with. In this lifetime many children are mentally and physically challenged and have difficulties staying on task, interacting with their peers and are just totally isolated from the world. Here at Dunn’s Wonderschool, we recognize these challenges and we tailor our program so therefore all children’s needs are met.

Philosophy

At Dunn’s Wonderschool, we provide a clean, safe healthy environment where every child can develop emotionally, physically, intellectually and socially. We are committed to providing safety and security for all children. We encourage learning and growth through play in an environment designed so that children may strengthen muscles, build coordination, stretch their imagination and have fun.

We believe that children should be allowed to grow at their own pace, and to learn in ways that help them become confident in themselves as learners. Our goal is to provide all of our children with a clean, safe, comfortable and nurturing environment. Respect toward self, others and the environment will be emphasized. We believe in the value of both structured and non-structured activities. Structured activities will include the use of a curriculum, academics, regular reading times, circle time, art & crafts, cooking, musical activities and science. Outdoor play will be more flexible activities. It is our goal to create an environment and program where the child’s natural desire to learn is stimulated through meaningful, appropriate and playful learning experiences, one that meets the needs of each child as an individual.

Location

Dunn’s Wonderschool is located in a bright, welcoming single family home in the Carson neighborhood.

We’ve designed our care environment with play and learning areas that allow children to explore various developmentally-appropriate activities based on their interests. Some of our favorite areas include sensory area (for spatial awareness and learning through the five senses), block area (for gross motor skills and problem solving), and manipulatives and math area (for fine motor skills and beginning math concepts).

Children will have some outdoor time everyday at mix of both my private yard and local parks and playgrounds. Children need space to run, jump, and move!

At Dunn’s Wonderschool, I want to provide an environment that supports the cognitive, social, and emotional growth of each child.

About our program

Our program is special because we have staff that has years of experience working with young children as well as an educational background in Early Childhood Education. We are also special because we allow our children to explore their environment and give them opportunity to use their creative minds through a variety of material. Our program is set up like a preschool with defined area with materials that are labeled making it easy for children to put things back it is perspective place. Children are also allowed the opportunity daily to talk about their life experiences while away from childcare. This gives children the opportunity to built self-confidence while speaking before their peers it also builds their language skills. Another thing here at Dunn’s Wonder School we stress daily to children and parents is independence, our goal is to allow the children to do as much on their own before we step in, this makes children feel good about themselves when they can complete a task on their own. We love to give lots of positive reinforcement, praised and motivation, this allow the children to believe in themselves and take pride in their work.
