Our Teachers
My background is all about children. Following my degree at East Tennessee State University, I worked for the ETSU Child Study Center, as an aide in an inclusive classroom for the deaf and hard of hearing. However, after the birth of my second child, my family relocated to Glade Spring, VA. I opened my first Family Care Home (FCH) while my children were young , due to the fact I could not find suitable childcare in our area 30 years ago. My first FCH was called “Little People’s Preschool”.
During those years, I followed a preschool student from my FCH into kindergarten, where I had the privilege of being an interpreter for the hard of hearing in the Washington County School System in Virginia. I continued this path, with my former preschooler, for 6 years.
I also was the director and lead teacher at Emory &Henry Child Development Center for 10 years. During this period of time, I attended Emory & Henry College and earned my Masters of Education. Unfortunately, this center was closed in 2016.
I worked for four years in the private sector as an Infant and Toddler Specialist working with caregivers of Family Care Homes and Childcare Centers. I was trained as a CLASS observer, obtained training for the Program of Infant and Toddlers, and CSEFEL, which is the Center of Social and Emotional Early Learning. This was a wonderful learning curve in my career.
Now, I am back to my roots and I am loving every minute! I wouldn’t change a thing in my career with children.
Philosophy
I am a firm believer of responsive caregiving. A relationship between the caregiver and the child should be like doing a dance together. Each member of the playhouse feels valued, respected, loved, appreciated, and a part of the team.
Location
My home is warm, clean, and cozy; which is located less than 2 miles from Emory & Henry College. I have a lovely backyard that borders fields of lambs and a privacy fence which protects our Playhouse adventures. We love to play outdoors while listening to the birds, taking wagon walks, and enjoying our time together while experiencing nature.
