Our Teachers
Hello! I’m the owner/ Head Teacher of Richmond Learning Academy. Born and raised in Portland, OR. I’ve always had a passion to help raise children prior to having my own. I’m a passionate advocate for children’s well-being, which I combine with a deep interest in my business. My journey in this business began when I was searching for a daycare for my children in 2013. I discovered a stunning lack of quality, affordable care options in Portland and the surrounding areas. I realized I had to do something about it, so I created Richmond Learning Academy. Working with children and running my own business has been a life changing experience for me. It brings me unbelievable joy and fulfillment every single day. I don’t believe there is anything better than watching children develop, learn, and grow. Attention to details and warm touch are our brand’s essence. It is what we do!
Philosophy
Richmond Learning Academy strives to support the whole child during their educational journey. This is achieved by applying our mission statement. Our mission is to support both families and children in areas of educational involvement, social emotional development, nutritional services, community outreach and an all-inclusive school readiness. We firmly believe that when families are thriving as a whole then the child is successful as an individual. Collaboration is essential for building the foundation of relationships and preparedness for the future of our developing youth. One important aspect is collaboration. Richmond Learning Academy (RLA) enriches students’ minds by collaborating with student support systems. RLA builds support for the students by including parents in the process. The parents have real time information through a portal (BrightWheel). RLA welcomes the support of outside resources such as Occupational Therapist or Speech Pathologist to make changes, observe or modify learning to best fit the student. Another collaboration that RLA offers is community resources such as free backpacks or food for students. Community resources are not limited to backpacks and food and are catered to each family’s individual needs. RLA is constantly networking with community resources that will help the population of their students. Richmond Learning Academy provides inclusivity at school for children of all abilities. This is supported by the layout of the establishment. From our paint on the walls to the flooring of our establishment welcomes children. The items in the school are appropriate for students’ height and accommodates their small hands and feet. The color scheme and environment are welcoming and calming to all children but specifically to children who may be on the spectrum. We offer several sensory stations and breaks throughout the day. The curriculum is adjusted to student’s level based on assessments that are done weekly and quarterly. Learning is facilitated in different methods to ensure that students have multiple venues of learning and are able to take the skill and apply them in different settings. Another way that RLA supports students is creating independence and life skills. This is achieved by teaching students to recognize their emotional zones and regulations. Teaching students’ strategies on how to handle the emotions they are feeling and simultaneously teaching them problem solving skills. RLA practices life skills like brushing their teeth after meals, washing hands and cleaning routines throughout the day. A unique life skill that RLA offers is that we maintain a garden and take the food we grow home to their families or eat it for meals. RLA has a fish for a pet and students practice the responsibilities of taking care of a pet. Our students will be kindergarten ready after completing our curriculum. The curriculum that is used along with the varied teaching strategies ensures student success.
