Our Teachers

Loretta Miller

Loretta knew she wanted to be a teacher since she as in 3rd grade. It is only fitting that she is now the founder and primary provider at Scholars’ Wonderschool. She is also a pastor and started her ministry back in 1981 at Bethel Holiness Church. Since her assignment, she joined the choir, became the choir director, and was then asked to be a Sunday school teacher.

She is a former Catholic school teacher and has an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and has been working with children for 25 years, including raising her own. She was inspired to start Scholars’ Wonderschool because she saw a need for high quality care in her community and wanted to be a source for families and children needing love and support as they grew.

She keeps herself grounded by always asking herself how she can help the children around her and make sure she can be a more effective child care provider. She loves what she does and cares deeply about the families she serves.

Testimonials

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and Ms. L is the chief of that village. My daughter was born early and finding child care was very difficult for me. However, the way Ms. L handled my daughter, she encouraged me as the parent that everything was going to be okay.

My daughter started with Ms. L at 4 months old and is still in her care at age 3. She is very advanced and so confident in everything she does. My daughter gets both educational skills and life skills at this daycare. The kids know about their neighborhood, they know how to be smart both inside and outside of Ms. L’s classroom. If it weren’t for Ms. Loretta, I don’t know what I would have done.”

“My son is so much more verbal and expressive after being with Ms. L at Scholars’ Wonderschool. I had originally put him in a daycare center but I am so glad that I changed my mind and came to this daycare. My son is able to better self regulate and enjoys more structured activities. Ms. L has helped with potty training and increased his learning immensely. I am very happy he is in this program!”

Philosophy

In my daycare, I will always encourage the children to go forward in their learning and physical development to make sure they are growing and discovering new things every day. As a former teacher, I understand the true value of a high quality learning environment. At Scholars’ Wonderschool, I strive to provide a close relationship between the home and the daycare for the good of the families I serve in my community.

Location

Our program is located in a bright, inviting apartment in Harlem. I have specific learning areas that are stocked with age-appropriate materials for my children to explore. Children love my dramatic play area, using their fine motor skills building with blocks, and having music and movement time both indoors and outside at the playgrounds across the street!

About our program

At Scholars’ Wonderschool, we are more than just a daycare. The progression of our daycare starts with personal growth where we area constantly learning new teaching techniques that can contribute to the better development of our children.

We make sure to keep our children engaged during all times of the day. Activities are implemented earlier in the day and continue later in the afternoon after nap time. We use daily lesson plans to help better guide our day and make sure children are actively thinking, discovering, and moving throughout the day. They learn reading, writing, and counting skills, as well as creative skills through art and learning about photography! These lessons can take place indoors and outside if the weather permits.

We maintain a professional, organized setting where children are learning about the world around them and the necessary age-appropriate skills they need before entering grade school. The staff is well prepared and the flow of the day is always maintained for our children. We strive to meet the learning needs of children socially, physically, emotionally, and cognitively. Running a daycare that is well structured is mandatory in any learning environment.

It is so important for us as providers to establish and maintain a positive relationship with our families so parents can understand the learnings and discoveries their children are making with us every day. I recognize all my families and celebrate their diversity. I encourage the children’s families to get involved in our activities whenever possible and inform parents of fun upcoming events for the month.
