Our Teachers

As a child growing up in the Caribbean, I began my formal education at the age of five. My first teacher, Ms. Kay, was exceptionally knowledgeable and approachable. She demonstrated warmth and care, often welcoming students with a smile and a friendly gesture as we entered the classroom. I particularly valued the moments when Ms. Kay invited us to gather around her desk to enjoy the fresh fruits she brought daily. Her actions made us feel appreciated and important.

However, as I advanced in my education, I faced challenges with other educators. Many did not exhibit the warmth, patience, and kindness essential for effective teaching. These experiences motivated me, Rhonda, to pursue a career in education. After five years of teaching at the elementary level in the Caribbean, I furthered my education by obtaining a degree in Early Childhood Education from Medgar Evers College, an advanced degree in Psychology and Education from Touro College, and a Master’s degree from Northcentral University. With over 20 years of experience in Early Childhood Education, I am committed to making a meaningful impact on children’s lives, shaping their early learning experiences, and contributing to their long-term success.

Philosophy

At Angels of God Wonderschool, we recognize that children have an innate desire to learn from the moment they are born. Research indicates that the first five years of life are particularly crucial, as this period includes significant growth and developmental milestones that surpass those of later stages. During these formative years, children actively absorb knowledge from their surroundings, and experiential learning is a highly effective method for promoting their development. Experiences in these early years are essential for their brain development and educational journey.

Children acquire knowledge through a blend of self-directed exploration and teacher-supported guidance. Engaging in play promotes active learning and hands-on experiences through creating, constructing, and reconstructing. Participating in imaginative play enhances cognitive skills, language development, problem-solving abilities, and verbal and listening skills, all of which are essential foundational skills for lifelong learning.

Moreover, children’s learning experiences can be greatly enriched in a stimulating environment created by warm, engaging, nurturing, supportive, and responsive caregivers who recognize the importance of play as a vital component of childhood. Such an environment that encourages play-based experiences significantly bolsters children’s learning potential.

Location

Our program is in a secure apartment building in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. We incorporate outdoor time through community walks and occasionally at Brower Park, located at the intersection of St. Mark’s Avenue and Park Place, between Brooklyn Avenue and Kingston Avenue. We are conveniently located just a few blocks from the President Street station, which services the 2 and 5 lines, and the Nostrand Avenue station, which serves the 2, 3, and 4 lines.

About our program

We are a play-based program that allows children to learn and discover through guided activities and free play. As an in-home program with infants and toddlers, we are prepared to support your little ones and meet them at their level of development - always helping them to learn and explore. From the fish tank in our science area to the plentiful supplies in our art center, we strive to create a setting that is both academic and fun. Angels of God Wonderschool participates in a local food program, so all meals and snacks are provided and meet New York’s nutritional guidelines.
