Philosophy
The Montessori philosophy for early childhood education is a child-centered approach that emphasizes self-directed learning and individualized instruction. Developed by Italian educator Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, the Montessori method is based on the idea that children have an innate drive to learn and explore their environment.
In a Montessori classroom, children are given the freedom to choose their own activities and work at their own pace. Teachers act as guides, rather than lecturers, helping children to develop their own interests and explore the world around them.
The Montessori curriculum is designed to support children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. Activities are carefully designed to be developmentally appropriate, and to promote skills like concentration, problem-solving, and cooperation.
In a Montessori classroom, you might see: -Mixed-age classrooms, where children of different ages and abilities learn together. -A wide variety of materials and activities that children can choose from, including things like puzzles, sensory activities, and art supplies. -A focus on practical life skills, such as washing dishes or sweeping the floor, to help children develop independence and responsibility. -A calm, orderly environment that encourages children to focus and concentrate on their work. -A respectful and positive approach to discipline, in which children are encouraged to solve problems on their own and treat others with kindness and respect.
Overall, the Montessori philosophy is designed to help children develop a love of learning, a sense of independence and self-motivation, and the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
