Our Teachers
Laverne Sanders is the one of our morning openers for early drop students. Her experience in early childhood education includes a military-based experience, director of a high school day center for babies of unwed mothers, and over twenty-five years at The Nurtury. Many of our present enrollment includes third generation children. These parents remember Ms. Laverne fondly from their own experiences.
Chris Curtis, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, has taught at The Nurtury for 5 years. Formerly, she was Special Education Aid in a nearby high school. Her energy and devotion to children is recognized by both staff members, parents and guardians. She is especially interested in arts and crafts, and makes sure our vegetable garden is well-tended during growing and harvesting season.
Chloe Honaker is our PreK teacher. Her greatest strength in teaching is forming connections with students which yields great learning outcomes. Chloe uses our curriculum and molds it to meet the needs of each student. In her personal time, Chloe loves reading, napping, and snacking.
Alexis Orfield is our infant room teacher. Her whole family approach makes parents with our early learners feel comfortable and welcome. Prior to The Nurtury, Alexis was a early childhood special education paraprofessional in the school system.

Philosophy
The Nurtury was founded upon the belief that a child’s social, emotional, and mental well-being are all dependent on interaction with the primary caregivers in their life. Therefore, it is our intention to provide the benefits of qualified caring adults who will encourage a child’s trust, self-confidence, security, and independence. Our routine is an established one, with flexibility, which includes a variety of activities appropriate to each age group throughout the day. We use a VDOE approved curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for each age. Skills taught are based on a sequential scale building throughout the years. Play is essential to a developmentally appropriate program and our center-based environment supports this philosophy.
