Winter Play For Virginia Kids

Parent Resources

10th February 2022

Winter is here in Virginia! The state saying goes: “Virginia is for lovers.” This includes lovers of adventure, entertainment, and surprises, all of which Virginia offers in full. The state sees its fair share of snowfall, so sledding slopes and cabin getaways are a given. There are some other hidden gems in Virginia that will leave families cheering for more. Just because it is winter time does not mean you need to head into hibernation! Check out these five winter activities for kids in Virginia they won’t want to miss and won’t soon forget.

Make a Splash

The Massanutten Resort in McGaheysville has a 50,000 gallon water park centerpiece known as The FlowRider. It is a cannot miss indoor surfing attraction, steeped at a five-foot incline. They also have eight slides for the adventurous, water cannons for the mischievous, and a giant tipping bucket for dunking. Massanutten Resort also has a frog pond for the younger swimmers in your family. While you can make a weekend getaway out of your trip to the resort, day trippers are welcome as well.

Warm Up in a Museum

Want to escape the cold and watch wonder melt over the children’s faces? Take them to some of Virginia’s famous museums. Richmond’s Science Museum of Virginia or the Children’s Museum guarantee you and your children learn something new with every visit. The Virginia Aquarium does not just offer sapphire blue floating worlds to explore, but touch pools as well! Children get hands-on learning when they encounter horseshoe crabs, sea stars, sting rays, and other aquatic critters.

Hit the Snow

Bryce Resort is a must! In the Allegheny Mountains, west of Washington, D.C., the Bryce Resort is a great stop for sportier kids. First time skiers and snowboarders, four to six- year-olds and up can enjoy cutting tracks down the packed snow. Check out their Kinder School package, which includes equipment rental, lift tickets, helmet, indoor activities, snacks, and hot chocolate. There are multiple packages available for multiple age groups, so definitely give them a call. Not too far from Bryce Resorts? The mysterious Luray Caverns await with winter events and guided tours.

Skate By

Virginia loves its skating rinks. Immerse you and your family in the beautifully decorated streets of Reston Town Center. The Reston Town Center Pavilion Ice Rink is open November through March. You can also head to the National Mall for the National Gallery of Art Skating Ice Rink. Once you are finished with figure 8’s, warm up in surrounding museums or grab lunch from the nearby cafes.

Historical Events

Mount Vernon is one of the most family friendly, historical landmarks in Virginia. They are constantly hosting events at the George Washington Estate. Take the guided tour to see how the founding father lived, or have tea with Martha herself. Historical re-enactments and figures brought to life, musical events, and George Washington’s birthday celebration all await you in February. A word to the wise – Mount Vernon offers exciting festivals and family activities all year round. Keep your eyes on their calendar for more excursions for you and your family.
