After a 10-year career in corporate and governmental funding, I discovered Waldorf Education when I was pregnant with my son who is now 21 years old. Waldorf Education reminded me of the best parts of my childhood, and I dove into researching and writing about it while getting my master’s degree at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. I felt deeply connected to the teachings and continued my understanding of its early childhood methods. I certified in a Waldorf Birth-to-Three program in Keene, New Hampshire and trained in the Waldorf Kindergarten program in Chestnut Ridge, New York. I felt more in alignment with Waldorf Education because it philosophically included many aspects of my wellness practice, gave a preventative pedagogy which promised the true health of a child, and it helped me manage my household efficiently simply because it supported living, working, and playing in rhythm with nature. My 19 year teaching career has journeyed me through four prestigious Waldorf schools, alongside with some of the most incredible master teachers who continue to extend their mentorship. Now, I’ve landed in Amagansett to build a nest for children in my cottage which is surrounded by three farms and their bountiful markets. My ultimate passion is supporting children by encouraging their families to build their home & family culture so that they can make the most happy childhood memories.
Philosophy
Waldorf Education was founded by Rudolf Steiner. It stands apart from other philosophies in that it follows the rhythm of human development as timing for education. The early childhood is pre-academic as we educate the will of the child through working with their hands and habits, which will become their lifelong foundation. Waldorf Education allows for the student to achieve their 10,000 hours of childhood movement while receiving a plethora of oral-tradition in seasonal verses, songs, stories and puppet shows as this seems to be an efficient way of digesting content. At the same time, the child is given the space to self-initiate action within our daily rhythm until self regulation becomes consistent. These developmental milestones culminate into the celebrations of our festivals where the young child can relax in the care of their families while spending time with others to cheerfully welcome the next season in gratitude and thankfulness.
Location
Amagansett means “place of good water” by the indigenous Montaukett people. Three major farms and their markets surround this area. It is accessible by local public transportation and the Long Island Rail Road.
About our program
I’m a trained Waldorf teacher who will guide your children through the rhythms of the year in nature. Besides walking throughout the land(8:30am), we will come inside for a warm snack(9:30am), do our chores and toilet before going back out to play(10:30). Your child will experience our circle-time gathering where they will learn seasonal songs, verses, movements and quietness to being them into alignment with their developing gross and fine motor skills(11:20)*. Afterwards, we’ll have a birdie bite before engaging in our weekly activity & more outdoors play(11:30am). Then we’ll comeback from the forest to nap before we have lunch(1:30pm). We’ll begin closing our day with inside play and activity prep for the next day. (2pm) Finally, we’ll have our third snack (3:30pm) and tidy up before gently ending our day (4:30pm). This daily rhythm will be bookend with parent education and seasonal festivals that will fortify the life in the home and create cozy time with community. Parents will also be supported with regular check-ins.
