Philosophy
Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada (BGCWN)’s Smart Start strives to provide quality care and developmental building blocks for children between three and five years of age. Families and children feel safe and supported by caring staff, all of whom contribute to a positive, respectful, and enriching environment.
The mission of BGCWN Smart Start is to provide an age-appropriate environment that meets the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs and abilities of each child. In doing so, we seek to inspire and enable the healthy development of all young children, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential in life.
Location
The Smart Start is located inside of the Boys & Girls Club Clubhouse on Russell Way. This prime location is right next to Highway 50, Interstate 580 (Old US 395), and has a bus stop steps away from the front door. The Fulstone Wetlands is a beautiful nature path across the street from the facility as well as a quiet neighborhood that sits between us and Mark Twain Elementary School (which is a 10 minute walk from the Club).
About our program
The Smart Start at Russell way program serves children ages 3-5 years. The curriculum is derived from the Nevada Department of Education’s Pre-Kindergarten Standards. Through planned activities and consistent daily schedules, as well as a safe and caring environment, staff meet each child at their individual creative, emotional, intellectual, physical, and social needs to assist them on their developmental path. Each preschooler’s love of learning is nurtured by balancing structured and unstructured daily activities, which promote each child’s unique and intrinsic sense of wonder. By providing a variety of hands-on activities and experiences to encourage exploration, manipulation, problem solving, and sharing, each child is given a sense of empowerment and self-control.
BGCWN seeks to provide not only a safe, nurturing, and positive environment for children to develop fully but also as a part of the family’s support system. We work with parents to bolster their confidence in their role by providing insight into the development and behavior of young children. We also believe in making every effort to involve parents in the education of their children.
