Philosophy

We at the Portales High School Childcare lab believe that all children are unique in every way. Many different things contribute to the uniqueness of each child such as: the environment, playmates, parents, learning method and rate, and the caregivers. We support the ideas that parents are the first and primary early childhood educators; children learn through play and investigation; teachers support, question and secure the environment to encourage and allow the child the freedom to explore, make decisions, and experiment.

The role of the staff will be to provide a warm, nurturing, and relationship with each child. The caregiver is not there to replace the parent, but to provide the nurturing while the parents are away. Security and trust are established with each child having a primary caregiver. The caregivers plan activities, ask open-ended questions, guide the child through problem solving activities, and enrich the environment to guide children through the developmental process.

About our program

We are a New Mexico GRADS center, this means that we serve the young parents attending high school to ensure they can further their education. We also serve the district staff and are open to community members if we have space available.
