Philosophy
At Roots & Wings Forest School, we believe that children are intrinsically motivated to learn. Our goal is to promote learning across all developmental domains (physical, cognitive, social, and emotional) by providing a positive environment that encourages discovery and exploration of the natural world in every season. Our program is play-based and child-centered. We believe that children learn best through direct experience - and children experience the world through play! Our child-centered approach provides children with a sense of confidence, responsibility, and empowerment. We believe that by learning in and about the natural world, children will care for their environment and what happens to it. Spending time outdoors is critical to the physical, cognitive, and social development of children. We spend the majority of our school day outdoors in our forest classroom whenever possible.
Location
We are located on 40 acres of field and forest just outside of New York Mills, MN. In rain, snow, wind, and sunshine, Roots & Wings is an outdoor forest school. By embracing Mother Nature, we hope to instill a love and respect for nature while promoting the endless benefits of outdoor play. Our program DOES provide indoor classroom space for inclement weather and winter programming.

Come see what makes Roots & Wings Forest School unique. If we are currently hosting tours, you can request or schedule a tour at the top of this page. If we are not currently hosting tours, you’ll see a “Request Info” button at the top of this page; if you submit your information using this button, we will notify you when we start host tours again in the future.
3. Submit an Enrollment Application
If you would like to enroll, please submit an application at www.wonderschool.com/roots-&-wings-forest-school-8791/apply – note that we require tours for all prospective families. Please do not submit an application if you have not visited the program.
