Meet Shavonne
Parent Mentor • Advocate • Children’s Pastor
Shavonne has dedicated her life to supporting children and families through education, mentorship, and advocacy. For over three years, she has served as a Parent Mentor, walking alongside families and working closely with kindergarteners to build strong foundations for learning.
Her commitment to children extends beyond the classroom. As a passionate advocate for early childcare education, Shavonne has worked as a lobbyist and collaborated with the local Parent Network to ensure parents’ voices are heard and represented. She has been featured in the Osbourne Neighborhood Alliance three times for her outstanding contributions to the community.
Since 2018, Shavonne has also served as a Children’s Pastor, offering guidance, encouragement, and a safe place for children to grow spiritually and emotionally. She believes that every child deserves someone to look up to, a safe environment to thrive in, and support in understanding the world around them.
At the heart of all her work is her belief: children should feel safe, valued, and understood.
Philosophy
My personal values and belief on teaching and around teaching and learning is that it prepare the children and helps them to be ready for the work that’s coming their way. My belief and values involve being prepared to take account of the well-being of others and preparing and commiting the time, energy and resources needed for good parenting and supporting the needs of families with different cultures that addresses the whole child. I believe in the value of quality care and education for every child and family right from the beginning of knowing the family. My teaching is a big step for me being a provider, giving the children a chance to grow and be something. Young children learn at their own pace. There are some children who are visual learners where they have to see things to get it and other’s are more into “just show me and I got it” stage. I believe that it’s easy to teach children especially at a young age because children can pick up on things because there brains are like sponges.
Children also pick up on things because they hear and try to mimic the things they hear, so I have to be very repetitive with them. They learn better if you teach them the same thing over and over again. I also think that mobile infant and toddlers are advanced. They can learn sign language, and it’s really easy to teach. They just need a direction to go in. Our children are the future, and I have to train them in a way that they need to go and try to keep them on the right path and never lead them wrong.
Finally, I play my role as the second parent because I’m responsible for that child from the time the parents drop their child off until the time they are picked up. So actually, I’m their teacher and protector, so I have to keep them safe and make them feel secure. I also make sure that the children are fed and dry. I play a very important role in the children’s lives, and I have respect for the parents, as well as for their children, no matter if they are mean or nice. I commit myself to the children and my role in their lives is to give them all they need to further their education.
