Lisa Bruno, Director & Head Teacher

Lisa is a Brooklyn native with over 10 years of experience working with children. Her rich background includes teaching positions at several well-known schools in Brooklyn including Red Hook Playgroup, Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, and Brooklyn Friends. She received her AMI Montessori training from Montessori Northwest in Portland, OR and her Master of Education degree from Loyola University.

While working at a preschool in Brooklyn, Lisa was advised to read the biography of Maria Montessori by E.M. Standings. Inspired by Montessori’s life and work, Lisa began reading Montessori’s books, The Secret of Childhood and _The Absorbent Mind. _She found the philosophy of observation and child-led learning to meld with her own ideas of respectful and progressive education.

Prior to working in Early Childhood Education, Lisa received her undergraduate degree in Studio Art from Hunter College and spent several years living and working at The John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina where she learned to knit, quilt, play guitar and contra dance. An active member of The Folk School community, Lisa continues to visit the school annually and has taught classes in hand lettering, weaving and painting. Lisa also teaches art and education classes at the Brooklyn Brainery.

When not working with children, Lisa can be found riding her bike, crafting, playing guitar or on long walks with her dog, a 9-year-old rescue named Whistle Pig. Whistle Pig lives on the premises but does not have direct contact with the children.

I had the pleasure of working with Lisa when she was the guide to my youngest son’s classroom. Lisa has a gift for working with children and she is magic in the classroom. She is both patient and encouraging and she offers her students an opportunity to explore freely following in Maria Montessori’s method of child-led learning. I looked forward to hearing her thoughtful and insightful feedback on how my son was doing, where he needed support, and how we could collaborate together. We had a school to home and vice versa partnership. She was both accessible and accommodating. My little guy exhibited challenging behaviors almost on a daily basis and Lisa never made me feel like my son was a “bad” boy (as some have called him). Instead she described him as having big feelings and noting it was his way of expressing himself. I always felt like the following day he had a clean slate and a do-over. As a mom that was comforting because I felt he had a guide that was helping him sort his big feelings in a safe space. Since her departure we have kept in touch and have had a few outings together - I have truly enjoyed getting to know her outside of the teacher/guide role. She’s just a joy and a wonderful person. She’s passionate, dedicated, creative, crafty, artistic, bubbly and a magical human being. She is an all hands on-deck team player and would make an incredible care provider for your child. You will be abundantly blessed by her commitment to young children and families. Feel free to reach out should you have additional questions.

Lisa is an excellent teacher and shares her enthusiasm and excitement for her subject matter with others. She is very patient and breaks down tasks into manageable parts. Lisa takes time to get to know her students and tries to entice them to try lessons that are slightly more challenging than they think they can accomplish. She allows them to make their own “discoveries” which creates more opportunities for them to learn. I highly recommend that you take the opportunity to work with her.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Lisa both as an esteemed colleague and through her work as my son’s preschool teacher. Her love of children is clearly evident through her thoughtful and creative work. She is a keen observer of her students, ensuring their classwork fits their cognitive, physical and emotional development. As a parent, I enjoyed Lisa’s candid insight into my son’s progress. It was clear she knew his academic abilities well through the challenges she set for him in the classroom. She also had a good sense of his social needs, helping him as he navigated through this new world of “school.” Though we worked with different grade levels, Lisa and I had the opportunity to engage during faculty meetings and other professional development. I enjoyed having Lisa as a colleague as we share similar educational philosophies and often compared classroom stories or sought insight from each other. Lisa is a wonderful teacher and I highly recommend her!

Lisa is a Montessorian dream. Not only does she possess an early-childhood wealth of knowledge, she is also incredibly passionate about what she does. Plus kids love her, truly. As a first-time mother to an almost one year old babe, I ran into many obstacles as I attempted to create appropriate spaces for our baby and implement Montessori learning into our day-to-day. Lisa has been both my sounding board and my consultant, on what seems like a daily basis sometimes! I appreciate everything she has done to foster the love of Montessori in our home, something I hope to stick with for many years to come, and for many evolutions of prepared spaces.

Lisa has been working with our family for the past year, and I can honestly say that she is one of the few care givers that I truly trust to be with my child. Not only is she capable, but she really seems to understands how to interact with little ones in a way that they can relate to. I can tell that our son really likes spending time with her too! Whether it’s potty training or getting him to hold hands when crossing the street, she’s always patient and caring, but not afraid to set limits either.  He is always happy to see her, feels safe and trusts her - and we feel the same way. We are so grateful to have Lisa in our lives, and it’s made a huge difference in our schedules to have the added flexibility that comes when you have a trusted care giver. As a parent there’s not much more you can ask for!

Brooklyn Children’s House offers an authentic Montessori experience for children aged 2.5 to 5 years old and serves families throughout Brooklyn. Please use this website for information on our program and if you would like to learn more, please contact us to schedule a tour.

The Montessori method was developed by Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, around the turn of the 20th century. Montessori called her first classroom “Casa dei Bambini”, or Children’s House. Inspired by that first classroom where this wonderful pedagogy blossomed, our school is called Brooklyn Children’s House.

Montessori education is based on scientific observation of child development with a goal for every child to become an independent being of their own time and place, uniquely individual and ready to walk their own path with confidence. The Montessori curriculum and materials all have a specific purpose in aiding the child’s development. Every day, the children participate in a “work cycle.” During the work cycle, the children are free to interact with the Montessori materials of their choosing from the different areas of the classroom that include, art, music, language, math, sensorial and practical life.

Walking into a Montessori classroom, you will find children working on all different kinds of materials. Children are taught in individual and small group lessons. We teach to the child, not to the group, as we recognize that each child is learning at a different level, has different interests and their own unique personality. Each child has their own individual lesson plan developed by their teacher to meet their individual needs. In this way we are also able to combine ages. The mixed age group offers an opportunity for children to learn from each other, develop empathy and practice the third level of mastery: being able to teach something to someone else.

We invite the children to participate in group activities that involve music and singing, games, stories, books, outdoor education and cultural experiences. Everything in the environment is chosen with care, is child-sized, beautiful and serves a developmental purpose. The children are encouraged to use the environment to their full advantage. When they are hungry, they help themselves to food. When they are thirsty, they fetch themselves a glass of water. When something spills, they clean it up. All the tools and materials they need are readily accessible to them without adult intervention, fostering independence and self-advocacy.
