Phebe West, Owner, Lead Teacher Phebe and her husband built their home in 2010 and converted the 4-bay garage into a childcare space in 2015. Phebe has a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana University. She worked as a kindergarten teacher from 2006 – 2015 and spent most of that time at Taylorsville Elementary. She also taught homebound students for a year. After 9 years of formal teaching, she knew that what was required of her was not what was best for her students. She encountered children who had no social emotional skills, had never had any type of formal learning, and some who didn’t speak English; yet all were held to the same level of expectations as those who came in ‘ready’. After 9 years, she decided shewanted to do her part to help this and opened Learn By Heart in 2015. Her passion is to teach children at the level they are at rather than the level they are told they should be at. She does this while integrating social and emotional skills that will better prepare them for their academic career.
Lesley Moss, Co-owner, Teacher support
Lesley joined Learn By Heart in 2016. She graduated from Ivy Tech with an Associates of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education in 2020. While obtaining her degree, she was able to apply best practices to the curriculum at Learn By Heart. Lesley is driven by seeing how high-quality approaches to care result in successful growth and development for children. She loves helping children and being an extension of families in her role, and values supporting families as much as time in the classroom. The dynamic between Phebe and Lesley creates a learning atmosphere that is unmatched!
Filosofía
Learn by Heart is a state licensed Family Home Child Care. We are NAFCC (National Association for Family Child Care) accredited and a Level 4 Paths to Quality childcare provider.
At Learn By Heart, children participate in guided lessons daily. The lessons are catered to each child’s developmental abilities. Our lessons are divided into units, which rotate on a monthly cycle.
Most of our day is spent playing with peers. Play is often guided, and play opportunities are set up based on our unit. We integrate opportunities for exploration and expanded learning into our play space regularly.
Ubicación
We are located in Grammer, IN which is near Rockcreek Elementary School. We are rural, so we have many opportunities to take walks within our neighborhood down low traffic roads, visit a local playground, talk to local farmers, and enjoy nature. The Bartholomew County Book Mobile visits our facility once per month and the children can pick out books for our classroom. Our rural location gives us the unique opportunity to explore the outdoors in safe, hands on manner without fear of heavily populated or high traffic areas.

Our mission is to provide quality learning experiences through play and interaction with others; emphasizing the value of social and emotional skills alongside of academic abilities. We have a strong comprehension of kindergarten readiness as well as what skills will serve children as building blocks for their future. We believe the entire family well-being, engagement, and positive relationships are critical to a child’s success and value this above all.
