WE LOVE NATURE!

We love our planet! We are grateful for this beautiful land and sea that we get to call home. We recognize that we live and learn on unceded Ramaytush Ohlone land.

Through our learning at La escuela colibrí we work to deepen our connection with the Earth, learning about the past, present and future of the land we play and learn upon. Our outdoor classroom gives us the opportunity to explore and learn about how to love, respect, and care for our planet and the various (eco)systems that hold us as we become advocates for ourselves and future generations.

WE LOVE DIVERSITY!

We value our community’s diversity! Each student and each family bring different identities to our Escuela Colibrí community. These racial, gender, dis/ability, cultural, citizenship, family structure, class, linguistic, religious and other differences and similarities strengthen our community and each person in it. Through ongoing and developmentally supported exploration of our identities and intersections, we learn about their importance and their beauty. We also begin to investigate how systemic injustices give and take power along these lines and intersections of difference.

All children deserve the chance to learn through exploration and play. Inclusion and safety are nurtured through honest conversations that trust children’s capacity for empathy and kindness. We strive to give students confidence and knowledge about who they are.

WE LOVE PLAYING AND LEARNING!

Learning is fun! La escuela colibrí is a play-based, child-centered, creative space where children learn through hands-on experiences, inquiry-based explorations, art, music, movement, conversation, games and books. Student curiosity guides our shared learning, leading to meaningful connections and powerful learning.

Books and story-telling teach us about ourselves, each other, and worlds we have yet to know. Reading is an important part of our learning and read-alouds often anchor our lessons. Students access a wide variety of high-interest Spanish and English texts, cultivating a shared love of stories and books.

Drawing upon our previous roles as reading and Kindergarten teachers, we also prepare students for future learning environments. We give students space to wonder and grow as they gain the confidence, advocacy skills, and academic growth they will need for Kindergarten and beyond.

WE LOVE LANGUAGE!

We love Spanish and English and the wonder of language! We spend around half of our time teaching and learning in Spanish and the other half in English.* We also encourage students to share other languages (like ASL, Arabic, Cantonese, Hindi, Tagalog and others) that they know and/or use in their homes.

Children develop bilingualism and multilingual curiosity as they communicate and make connections with peers. We support students’ understandings at all fluency levels, relying upon various language acquisition teaching strategies. We sometimes translate to ensure that all students feel safe, included and encouraged throughout their learning.

*Note: La escuela colibrí accepts students who speak Spanish and/OR English. Fluency in either is not required, though ability to communicate in one of these languages is extremely helpful.

WE LOVE JUSTICE!

We’re here for justice! Our children are our future, and an important part of our work as early educators is to nurture their resilience. We develop students’ knowledge, confidence and hopefulness to fight for justice in their own lives, their communities and their world. La escuela colibrí encourages acknowledgement of injustice and harm while working towards justice and healing.

Our children will need to continue the ongoing work of social and environmental justice and activism. By encouraging creativity and deepening compassion and knowledge, we hope to support even the youngest activists to realize their dreams.

At La escuela colibrí we are working towards transformative justice. We are abolitionists and share the belief that no one is disposable. When harm and conflict occur in our learning community, we work to center justice, love, and interdependence in our responses. We honor that each individual in each situation has their own unique needs, histories, and ways of processing.

WE LOVE OURSELVES, OUR FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITY!

We love us! La escuela colibrí is an inviting, child-centered space where children and their families are respected and loved.

We strengthen our connections with each other through empathy, trust, and social-emotional learning. We use mindfulness and our understandings of interdependence to manage our emotions and work together. We value our health and the health of our community.

We embrace and encourage self-knowledge, self-care, self-advocacy, and self-love.

We hope you’ll join us!
