Philosophy

At Union City Wonderschool, children begin their days with self-initiated and self-directed learning. We believe this to be the best vehicle to guide their ideas and experiences. We provide the space and support for children to try out their ideas and make meaningful connections about their world. Children are supported in whatever ways they individually choose to express themselves. Here at Union City Wonderschool, a child’s emotional disposition is at the heart of our teaching. Giving children the vocabulary and time to express their emotions is a key component to the healthy interactions we have here at our school. The environment is prepared for engagement, adventure, and discovery. We provide materials to support the collaborative and independent ways that children engage with one another. We believe these types of collaborations between children and teachers solidify a child’s understanding of themselves, other people, and the world around them.

Our Teachers

Director: Uwimana Middleton

Uwimana has worked in the field of Early Childhood Education for 17 years. Her journey began while volunteering during her summers at the child development center she attended as a child (Dr. Charles R. Drew Child Development Center in San Francisco). Her early start gave her the foundation she needed to be sensitive to the many different learning styles of children. She would later use her insight in working with infants, toddlers, and preschool-age children.

She has held both substitute and head teacher roles in a variety of settings (universities, churches, parent co-ops and after school programs). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development with an emphasis in Child Growth and Development from Pacific Oaks College. She also holds a California Teacher’s permit.

Uwimana enjoys her profession immensely and maintains her enthusiasm and commitment to Child Development by attending local conferences and keeping up to date with the latest early childhood education research in the field.

She enjoys spending her extra time outdoors with her husband and 2 children, checking out new parks, and going on adventures with her extended family.
