Philosophy

South Lake Wonderschool aims to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children have the opportunity to build confidence in a school setting, create relationships with their classmates, and explore the world around them through hands-on activities.

Our curriculum is based on the Montessori method, which promotes child-centered learning. We honor the child’s natural curiosity and our classroom is designed to encourage children to pursue their own personal interests. Our individualized instruction allows each child to progress through the curriculum at their own developmental pace and in a manner that complements their learning style.

We place a strong emphasis on social and emotional development. We guide students through everyday social interactions and conflict resolution, ensuring that they develop the skills necessary to express themselves clearly, build strong peer relationships, and comfortably navigate social situations.

Our hope is to create a program that can grow with your child! The toddler program will transition to a preschool program as the children mature. We hope to create a partnership with parents so that we may work together to provide fantastic learning experiences for your child for years to come.

Location

Our tree-lined block makes for wonderful walks around the neighborhood. South Lake Wonderschool is located in the heart of Pasadena just blocks from Old Town and Caltech with easy freeway access to the 110, 210, and 134 at 250 South Oak Knoll Avenue Pasadena, CA 91101.

Our school occupies two large rooms in a ground floor apartment in the gated Franklin House community. Large windows in both rooms allow for a bright and airy atmosphere. Surrounded by beautiful morning glory flowers, our outdoor play area provides a great place to spend time outside each day.

About Our School

Our main classroom space provides a variety of classroom materials and learning centers, including Practical Life, Sensorial, and Art. Practical Life activities promote care of the environment and care of self while building strong fine and gross motor skills. Sensorial activities help the child recognize and categorize according to size, shape, and color. Our Art area allows for creative expression and gives the students experience with a variety of art mediums. As the children show readiness, we will also introduce beginning Math and Language concepts.

Our secondary space enables the children to engage in imaginative play and big movement activities. The children will start their day in this room before transitioning to the classroom for morning circle. Both spaces include a comfortable reading area where children can find a quiet place to relax.

We believe in fostering children’s desire for independence and aim to provide opportunities for the students to do for themselves whenever possible. While the teacher is always available to assist, the child-sized furniture and organized shelves allow the children to access materials, serve themselves snack, and take part in activities independently.
