Las Vegas Parents: 4 Child Care Tips to Introduce Reading to Your Kids

Child DevelopmentParent Resources

26th December 2021

Reading is an amazing way to unlock your child’s imagination, inspire them to tell their own stories, and generally enjoy the practice of curling up in their own space with a good book. Introducing a child to reading can also present new challenges and hurdles for our young ones as they start learning comprehension, phonics, and literacy! That is why it is important to remember that all children read at different paces. No matter what, the process can be fun, engaging, and a true bonding experience. Here are four tips to introduce reading to your kids!

Build Phonemic Awareness

Nursery rhymes and songs are not just great at teaching our children lessons, they are perfect playmates toward building phonemic awareness. Singing or clapping rhythmically together as you read can help connect syllables and sounds to words. Also, it’s just plain fun to do together! This can be done at home or on the go during errands or road trips.

Keep It Fun

Play makes everything a little easier. Keep letter magnets on the fridge for some wordplay on the fly, throw some practice words and phrases out in the car, and draw word cards up to keep the learning environment enriching and fun. Do not forget to celebrate your little reader for their hard work! For example, you could create a chart of their progress, and when they reach certain goals reward them for their accomplishment.

On The Daily

Practice reading together every day. Not only are you bonding, you are encouraging them to retain and practice everything they are learning. Make sure you ask them what they are reading, sounding out certain words or asking them to sound a troublesome word out together, and stay engaged with their reading content. This also fosters stronger literacy and comprehension as they learn what letters, sounds, and words.

Be Patient

Every child learns at different rates and in different ways. Work with your child by playing to their strengths and help them to apply those strengths to their trouble spots. Remember to stay encouraging, positive, and flexible. You will need to adjust as you go, but what a story you will tell together!
