Weekend Trips in Albuquerque For Children

Parent ResourcesParenting Tips

4th February 2022

The weekend is finally here! You have been working all week, and so have your kids. You’ve more than earned some weekend fun or R&R. You may find yourself wondering, “What are fun places for kids near me?” Since you live in Albuquerque, NM, you have your pick of the litter when it comes to finding fun places to take the kids. The city is your oyster, because there are always things to do in Albuquerque! Here are four fun places to go with kids so you can all make a weekend to remember.

Head to the Museum

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is perfect for any junior scientist looking to learn more. Focusing on the Atomic Age, this museum has the discovery of atomic energy to the Manhattan Project. Outside in Heritage Park, kids will be wowed by parked B-52 Bombers. For a look further into the past, check out the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. One moment they will be marveling at the fossilized T-Rex skull, the next they will be walking through a volcano. The onsite planetarium and IMAX theater are not to be missed! They may even have a chance to meet a reptilian friend.

Take Flight or Settle in at Local Parks

This 18,000 square foot facility offers gaming, trampolines, an Olympic foam pit for flips, and a Trampoline Dodgeball cage. “Flight Tickets” for simulated skydiving jumps are a hot ticket, so purchase those ahead of time to get a taste for indoor jumps. Theme and Family Nights are always being updated. Keep your eyes peeled on the calendar, especially as birthdays start rolling around.

For a slower change of pace, check out the ABQ BioPark. The activities here can fill an entire weekend! Visit the zoo, head to the fishing lake, or take in the aquarium. The nearby Tingley Beach is perfect for paddle boats or racing model sailboats. The colorful botanical garden is ready for children to enjoy the Butterfly Pavilion or get swept up in the Children’s Fantasy Garden.

The Great Outdoors

Sandia Peak Ski Area is not to be missed. The chair lifts offer a perfect view of the Sandias range during the summer and fall months. The hiking trails are sprawling and gorgeous to explore. During the winter months, you can hit the slopes. Get back in touch with nature further by visiting the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. After you go through the steel culvert pipe tunnel, the sprawl of the Rio Grande is at your feet. The park is packed with hiking trails and nature classes. There are even seasonal camps if the kids cannot get enough.

For the Thrill Seekers

Cliff’s Amusement Park is great to get the blood pumping. The CliffHanger tower has a heart-stopping plummet drop, and the Falling Star and Super Fire Ball roller coasters will have you screaming. Younger children can enjoy the quieter carousel or take a train ride around the park. For all of the thrills and none of the drops, take in a baseball game at Isotopes Park. Between innings, all the antics will have your children roaring with delight. Look out for the racing mascot, Orbit. Keep your eyes on the prize as t-shirts are launched into the crowd. Just do not forget to root for your home team!
