Gramercy Park Childcare and Playgroup is located between 1st and 2nd ave on the 23rd street. The apartment complex was built in the early ‘70s and comprised of 6 buildings. The complex has several of its on-site playgrounds. There is easy access to subways and buses. An assortment of schools, libraries, children’s bookstore and other family-friendly establishments line up the 2nd and 3rd Avenues and Irving Place, the main thoroughfares of the Gramercy Park neighborhood.
Once a week the toddlers and preschoolers get to go to the Union Square Farmer’s Market. Through interactions with the knowledgeable Farmer’s Market Guide, they get to learn about healthy food and how is it grown. Toddlers and preschoolers also love to dig into the compost and learn about the worms. We love being in the middle of bustling Manhattan as it provides us with vast cultural and educational opportunities.
Gramercy Park Child Care (NYC DOH) licensed infant and toddler care offers an intimate, loving, creative environment that invites children to explore, learn and reach their full potential. Children will engage in learning in a hands-on participatory manner that supports their overall development. Our small group of children engage in hands on learning, dramatic play, arts, music, outdoor time and plenty of one-on-one attention.
Afsana Khundkar is the founder/director of Gramercy Park Childcare and Playgroup which she established in 2008. Afsana, who is the mother of 2 boys, arrived in New York in her late teen in pursuit of higher education. She studied Jewelry and Accessory Design at The Fashion Institute and Technology (FIT) and after several years of working with various design houses, Afsana started her own business producing a small line of ladies accessories. At this time she was recognized by Sportswear International [magazine] for the success of her independent label.
When Afsana gave birth to her oldest son, she was determined to stay home and raise him. Her two sons are now resilient, competitive, driven young men who are currently enrolled in prestigious private schools here in New York. Using her entrepreneurial experience along with her creativity and commitment to children, Gramercy Park Childcare was born. Afsana brings this knowledge of focused clarity and pointed child-rearing skills to other families via the daycare.
Afsana is an active member of Washington Square Community Supported Agriculture and she shares her experience and knowledge of locally grown harvest as part of the Gramercy Park Childcare and Playgroup’s curriculum. Afsana maintains up-to-date training with CDA (Child Development Associate) certification by taking 30 hours of mandatory training every two years. As part of her professional development, Afsana participates in early childhood educational workshops offered by Bank Street College and New York University throughout the year.
Afsana is actively involved in her youngest son’s Boy Scout Troop and is a member of his school’s PTA. She is also a member of various local online mom’s groups where she has organized several Mom Meetup meetings. Since it was established in 2008, Gramercy Park Childcare and Playgroup has been a word of mouth business advertised and marketed only by word of mouth by satisfied parents who have recommended it to their friends and families through its years of existence.
Kristal Narine is an assistant childcare provider at Gramercy Park childcare and playgroup. Kristal met Afsana while attending high school. After graduating, Kristal took a gap year. Kristal is currently a full-time student at Lehman College. She intends on transferring to NYU to pursue a nursing degree. Her future goal is to become a pediatric nurse. Kristal enjoys being in the presence of children and caring for their needs. In the past year, she has completed thirty hours of health and safety training offered by the OCFS. She has also received CPR and first aid training. In her free time, Kristal enjoys cooking and volunteering.
