Little Kurls fosters a safe and caring family environment in a loving home for young infants. We focus on creating positive, trustworthy, and nurturing relationships, and on guiding infants’ development through play and adequate rest. In addition to early childhood development such as emotional, social, cognitive, motor/fine and communication skills, we integrate earth education and nature awareness into daily child-led and child-directed play and activity.

Please note that as of August 2, 2017 we are at capacity and no longer offering tours. You are welcome to join our waitlist by filling out the “Join Waitlist” form. We will be in touch if an opening becomes available.

Little Kurls Family Child Care is located in a warm, loving, safe and nurturing condo in San Bruno, CA. This 816 square foot condo features 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. This property was built in 1971. Little Kurls is near Commodore Park, Brentwood Park and Grundy Park. There is easy access to the major freeways (101, 280, and 380) we offer an ideal location and schedule for those commuting to and from San Francisco and the Peninsula and South Bay. Our condo has a great space where the young infants feel trust, safety and security. While one or two activities will happen outdoors for nature walks and sit spots, or a visit to one of the parks, the main area in the home will be the living room.

About Our School

We have deliberately designed the living room play area and activity space to be tailored for young infants (4-6 months) and infants (6-9 months). We all (both the teacher and the young child) experience confidence in a responsive, predictable and nurturing setting. The living room has plenty of natural and indoor light. Images of nature, such as “the young giving tree,” “the pollinator’s sunrise” and “the wisdom of the owls” are part of the creative art on the walls, which attracts the visual senses and spark imagination through storytelling. Mirrors are also set up for tummy time and self awareness time. Finally, we allow time for opportunities to sit, crawl, and pull. We celebrate and enjoy through observation, child-led and child-oriented discoveries, and the wonderful and exciting journey of walking.

We believe in using positivity and praise to foster healthy behaviors and a healthy learning environment. Our goals include teaching children self-control, kindness and gentleness with respect for themselves and others. Our solution-oriented techniques include redirection, anticipation, modeling, natural consequences, elimination of potential problems, and teaching children to resolve conflicts on their own in an appropriate manner.

Our Inspiration

Our passion comes from a background forged in permaculture design and through the experiences of 20 years in the Medical field. The vision that all people can live in a mutually enhancing relationship with the Earth holds a special place in our hearts. We envision a world in which people, inspired by nature, create and maintain healthy fertility and biodiversity on the planet. We hold on to the truth that humans are a positive, healing presence on Earth, creating more abundance on the planet than would be possible without them. We aim to reach the young future generations through influence and care.

Outdoor Play

Outdoor education is a large component of our philosophy and daily activity at ‘Little Kurls’. We have a hanging pollinator garden that children will use daily and we use our neighborhood playground for outdoor time to work on the development of motor skills. We integrate Earth Care, People Care and Future Generations care during our outdoor activities.

Our Teachers

Karla Paz, Director and Head Teacher

Karla is former medical evaluation assistant and the happy mother of four girls, including 5 month old Keziah. Karla is a solid pillar and an inspiration as an educator in the home front. Karla says: “I know that my experience in the medical field, while caring for others in various capacities, has equipped me with empathy, patience and compassion to partner up with the next generation of young humans in order to usher a new hope for ourselves, community and planet. After dedicating 20 years in the medical field, deciding to change was challenging. However, as soon as we knew that we were expecting our wonderful baby girl, we jumped at the chance to redesign our careers. Starting our family child care program was the most natural step for us.”
